AN INTRODUCTION TO DIFFUSION
DIFFUSION eBook Construction

DIFFUSION eBooks are shareable paper books that are free to download, print and make up (in A4 and US Letter PDF formats). Designed for viral distribution at almost no cost to readers, Proboscis regularly commissions new writing and creative publications which broaden discussion and debate around themes relating to our own projects and research. Proboscis also provides online design schematics, welcoming anyone, anywhere to adopt or re-interpret the format for their own uses.

Sharing Creativity
By using the internet as the distribution mechanism, DIFFUSION eBooks are accessible to a diverse readership across parts of the world that it would not be economical, or physically possible, to distribute traditional books to.
Readers are encouraged to share the eBooks electronically or as material objects. DIFFUSION aims to bridge analogue and digital media by taking the reader away from the computer screen and engaging them in the process of making with their hands. Through the physical act of making the eBook, a dynamic is created that blurs the distinctions between producers and consumers.

DIFFUSION GENERATOR
Proboscis is building a web service enabling people to create their own DIFFUSION eBooks without the need for graphic design expertise or access to professional DTP software. A private test of the system began in November 2006 and a programme of Case Study Residencies with artists and writers exploring the uses of the Generator at Proboscis' London studio begins in Summer 2007. Examples of eBooks created using the Generator will be added to the Library below on a rolling basis.

DESIGN
The format was conceived by Giles Lane with designer Paul Farrington.

SUPPORT

DIFFUSION is supported by Proboscis as part of our core artistic activity, but receives no direct funding itself. The Performance Notations and CODE series were funded by Arts Council England (Collaborative Arts Unit, 2000 & 2001). Several of the commissions for Species of Spaces were funded by London Arts (New Publishing Initiative, 2002 & 2003) and the original three commissions for Liquid Geography were published in collaboration with InIVA.

Please Donate
DIFFUSION is a self-funded project developed by Proboscis. Donations of any amount are important to support both the development of the Generator and to publish DIFFUSION eBooks and StoryCubes as free resources. HOW TO DESIGN A DIFFUSION eBOOK

Below are a series of schematics which detail the imposition (placement and orientation of DIFFUSION pages) on a larger sheet, such as A4, US Letter or even A3. The maximum number of sheets that can comfortably be folded through each other is seven, therefore we have only designed schemetics for eBooks of up to 7 Sheets (28 pages).

The schematics are applicable to any sheet size depending on the size of the desired eBook: e.g. to create an A5 DIFFUSION eBook, the sheet size would need to be A3. To create an A4 size eBook, the sheet size would be A2.
